What is a Business Valuation?
A business valuation is an appraisal of the monetary worth of the business for a specific purpose at a certain point in time. Generally, the specific purpose of the valuation will determine the “standard of value,” that the valuation professional will use in appraising the monetary worth of the business. There are many purposes for which a business valuation may be conducted such as divorce property division, bankruptcy, merger or acquisitions, and more. The specific purpose of the valuation will also determine the point in time at which the value of the business is appraised, known as the valuation date. The relevant valuation date for property division in divorce varies among states, but is generally either the date of separation, the date of divorce, or the date of trial.
